PARENTING THAT REALLY WORKS

Some practical ways to help kids of all ages, according to the experts.

  1. Don't try to make your child into a superconfident jack-of-all-trades. Says Mel Levine in his book Ready or Not: Here Life Comes, too much versatility "makes it hard to commit to the deep and narrow grooves of adult life." Instead, discover and promote your child's particular strengths.
  2. Use praise in specific, not global, terms. Superlatives like "You're the world's greatest kid!" translate to the child as "I', too special for life's rules." says Levine. Instead, try compliments that are much more realistic and griunded: "You really know a lot about spider."
  3. Academics and sport aren't the only avenues worthy of notice. Pay attention to your child's work ethic and moral values. Comments like "I see you worked hard to earn that B in spelling" and "Thank you for telling me about the dish you broke" send true messages of support and love.
